It is exciting to start the New Year off with CAS Watercolour..Happy Birthday Challenge!
Be sure and check out the beautiful watercoloured Birthday cards by our
very talented Design Team and awesome Guest Designer, Birgit (Rapport fran ett skrivbord).
I need several January Birthday cards. Thanks Loll for the perfect challenge!
I had fun practicing my No-Line Watercolouring using PB "The Sweetest Sound".
I stamped the image in my MISTI using Distress Ink Tea Dye, which showed me the details.
I used Arches Hot Press watercolor paper.
I left my card front in MISTI to keep image secure when watercoloring.
I used my Zigs to watercolor all the images. except the birds. Used my aqua pens to help blend, lighten and highlight the Zig watercolors.
I colored the birds with Prismacolor Pencils.
I had more control over the different colors on the birds by using the pencils.
I used Gamsol to blend the colors with paper stump.
After (an hour) happy with the results I die cut the image with MB Stitched Rectangle Die.
Popped up with fun foam and added SU sentiment.
Then mounted on SU Very Vanilla CS. So relaxing to watercolor.
I hope you get to join us at CAS Watercolour. You have until the 24th to play along.
Supplies:
Stamps: Penny Black "The Sweetest Sound". SU It's Your Birthday (ret)
Paper: SU Very Vanilla. Arches Hot Press.
Accessories: MB Stitched Rectangle Dies. MISTI. Prismacolor pencils. Gamsol odorless mineral spirits. Paper stumps. fun foam. 05 art pen for eyes and beaks. SU Aqua Pen.
Your watercolour birds on a branch are beautiful Nancy. Well worth the hours work. Great definition on the birds with using pencils. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks Loll. It was my best attempt at coloring these birds. In the past, I tried watercoloring them. I have seen more stampers using pencils for detail coloring and gave it a try. I was very pleased with the results. Dina Kowal http://www.dinakowalcreative.com/p/tutorial-index.html is my favorite artist. Hugs..
DeleteI beautiful combination of watercolouring and pencil work Nancy and the colours you have used are really pretty, and the red berries are perfect for a January birthday. x
ReplyDeleteThank you, Pat. So many new techniques to try :-) Thank you so much for all your wonderful comments. They are all so appreciated. Happy Creative New Year my friend. Hugs..
DeleteYou did a beautiful job on this Nancy! I have that stamp and after several failures I keep moving it to the bottom of my stamps! Yours is just gorgeous! Great idea to use pencils on the birds! Mine kept looking like a blob! You inspired me to try again though!
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean, Nancy. My birds always looked like a blob too. Please let me know when you try again. Hugs.
DeleteThis is one of my favorite stamps and your birds are so vibrant and beautiful! I love how you've placed the design panel off center!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Bonnie. I was so happy to finally use a technique that worked on this beautiful stamp. Good thing we have a streak of stubbornness and so do not give up! Hugs..
DeleteNancy, we have to try this in May, I think I need a personal lesson. I have the stamp but never inked it up. I also love the idea of mixing up the pencil and watercolours.
ReplyDeleteI would like to demo this technique. I have learned so much in just the few I have done lately. Everyone will have tips I am sure too:-) Hugs
DeleteJust beautiful Nancy! It looks just like a watercolour painting! Have a great week! Luv & Hugs. Hazel xx
ReplyDeleteMy Card Attic
Thank you Hazel. I so appreciate your comment knowing how busy you are. Hugs..
DeleteLove the way you used both Zigs and Prismacolor Pencils - makes an interesting contrast in media. Both birds and branches are beautifully coloured. I really like your layout - I'm always too stuck on getting the focal panel in the centre of the card base!
ReplyDeleteI was moving my layer around and decided I really liked it in the bottom corner:-) I hope we can do the no-line technique and pencils with gamsol at our retreat. I would like to demo. I want to do more of this technique. Hugs..
DeleteThis is simply beautiful, Nancy! It just looks like a Japanese paining! I LOve how you colored the birds - the colors and the pencil strokes make the feathers look so real. I feel like wring "happy birthday" in Japanese with black brush pen next to the birds and frame it! :-) Hugs.. Hideko
ReplyDeleteOh My...you make me blush, my friend:-) It would be even more beautiful with your brushed Happy Birthday:-) Hugs..
Deletethis is such a gorgeous card Nancy...I agree with above, looks like a Japanese painting...great job.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year mf and keep inspiring us.
xx Karen

ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Nancy! You know how I love birds. So hard to get them right, but your pencil coloring turned out fabulous. Haven't had my pencils out in a while, but plan to do lots more coloring this year. It's all fun! This is such a pretty mixed media creation!
ReplyDeleteHopefully I can share IRL before I use it for a Feb. birthday. Hugs..
